The suspension before the fall
A neutral, impersonal place without anchoring.
It installs the idea that nothing is stable, that everything can shift from one day to the next.
It prepares the progressive desocialization: living without place, without duration, without horizon.
The hotel is a space that promises nothing. A neutral, impersonal place without anchoring. You enter it as you would enter a parenthesis: nothing begins there, nothing ends there. It is a place where you exist without really being present, where you occupy a space without belonging to it. This absence of roots creates a strange sensation: you float.
In this environment, everything becomes unstable. The walls tell nothing, the objects carry no memory, the hours have no direction. The hotel installs the idea that everything can collapse from one day to the next. You live in a kind of pre‑fall, an in‑between where you wait for something without knowing what. It is a place that prepares the ground: when nothing is solid, anything can break.
Little by little, the hotel desocializes. You live without place, without duration, without horizon. Landmarks dissolve. You lose the notion of “home,” the notion of continuity, the notion of future. You become a passerby in your own life. The hotel is not a refuge: it is a threshold. A space where you detach from what you were before, without yet knowing what you will become after.
It is the suspension before the fall.
The moment when you stop belonging, but have not yet disappeared.
